Am I able to exercise during pregnancy?
Yes, exercise helps to decrease labor times and is good for your overall health. If your healthcare provider has not placed you on any restrictions it is fine to exercise. Lower impact exercise is probably more comfortable for pregnant women. Swimming, walking, pregnancy yoga, stationary biking are all good choices. You may do some weight training however you must realize that you are at a higher risk for injury due to the hormones “softening” your ligaments. You should try to keep the weight lighter and avoid lying on your back. Pregnant women have some difficulty with balance due to the changes in their body and therefore things like skiing, regular biking and horseback riding are not recommended. Make sure to keep yourself well hydrated. You should periodically check your heart rate and try to keep it below 150 beats per minute. You should limit the intensive portion of your routine to 45 minutes. Talk to your provider before starting any exercise program.
