What can I take for a cold/headache/backache?
Acetaminophen is safe to take in pregnancy. You should not take more than 3 grams or 6 extra strength tablets in one day. Ibuprofen is not recommended in pregnancy because it can affect the amniotic fluid volume. If you do not have high blood pressure you can take a decongestant (pseudoephedrine). If you do have high blood pressure you need to take medicine without a decongestant (i.e. Coricidin HB). Cough syrup is safe (again read the label regarding the decongestant if you have high blood pressure). If you have diabetes you need to get a sugar-free cough syrup. Talk to your provider about your personal situation.
